What is a Finished Obedience Dog?

Disclaimer: This is a finished obedience dog in my own opinion. Others may have a different idea of what a finished dog looks like. But basically, a finished dog can stay when told, come when called, and has good manners (no leash pulling, no barking at people or other dogs, no counter surfing, no trash can digging, no peeing in the house, no aggression). That's what everyone can agree that a finished dog is. Below is what I would like any dogs that I work with to master before I call them "finished."

OBEDIENCE

  1. Sit-stay/Down-stay under distraction - Can you take your dog to town and have him hold a sit-stay without breaking as a mother pushing a stroller passes by? As another dog comes by? As children ride their bikes by?
  2. Loose leash walking - Can your dog walk on a loose leash without pulling in all environments?
  3. Heel - In my opinion, it doesn't matter if a dog can heel on walks. They can walk in the general vicinity of you (in front, behind, off to the side, beside you) as long as they aren't pulling. But, can your dog do a left finish and hold a heel position until you give them a release cue? Around distractions?
  4. Come - Can your dog come when called under all distractions? Can you recall your dog away mid-chase of an animal or call your dog away mid-play with another dog?
  5. Place - Can your dog go onto a designed place (mat, rug, blanket, dog bed, platform, bench, chair) and stay there until released?
  6. Kennel - Can your dog enter his crate when told to and be quiet?
  7. Leave It - Can you say "leave it" and have your dog ignore something enticing such as food on the ground?
  8. Fetch - Can you have your dog sit and stay at heel position, set down an object at least 15' away, walk back to your dog's right side, release your dog to bring it, and have your dog return to either heel position or a proper, straight front position?
MANNERS
  1. Thresholds - Can your dog wait at a threshold such as a door or gate without bolting or rushing out ahead of you?
  2. Calm Greeter - Can your dog greet guests with all four feet on the ground (no jumping)?
  3. Off - Can your dog get off the couch when told?
  4. Handling - Can you pick up your dog's paws, open his mouth, run your hands from his head to his croup, lift up his tail, and check his ears without him showing shyness or nipping you?
  5. Off-Leash Politeness - Can your dog ignore people and other dogs while off leash (it's considered rude to allow your off lesah dog to approach people and other dogs, especially if those dogs are leashed)?
  6. Leash Walking Politeness - Can your dog walk by distractions without attempting to pull up to them, lunge at them, jump on them, bark at them, or bite them? Yes, I get that dogs can have fear issues. But a dog that lunges and barks at dogs and whines and attempts to jump on pedestrians is NOT a finished dog because that is poor behavior, even if it is related to fear or over-arousal.
  7. Drop whatever they have in their mouth - Can your dog drop whatever he has in his mouth? Even if it's a bone he's picked up on a walk, a piece of trash, or a toy?
  8. Table Manners - Does your dog ignore people when they eat (not sit there and stare or whine)?
  9. Gentle Treat Taking - Does your dog take treats gently (bite inhibition) or do you go "ouch" every time he takes a treat?
THAT'S A LOT OF CRITERIA

Yes, I know. But that's just my own definition because I have high standards. But as long as your dog can stay when told (until released), come when called (from any distraction), and has good manners, most would consider that a finished dog. I usually spend several months training and proofing each of the things on this list and until they're perfected, I never refer to my dog as "obedience trained." I'm training a boston terrier right now and we're on week 2. He knows sit, down, come, place, and kennel. But he cannot walk on a leash, fetch, heel, calmly greet people, drop what he has in his mouth, and has poor table manners (pesters me when I eat). So, even though he knows some basic commands, he's not what I'd consider a "finished obedience dog."

He's only here for 30 days and he won't even be finished by the end of the 30 days. It's up to the owner after a board and train to continue the training. By the end of the 30 days he will know all the basic obedience commands listed, but the manners depend on what the owner does. If the owner gives the dog table scraps, allows the dog to get away with pulling, allows the dog to ignore the "off" command, and let's their dog bolt through doors, the dog's manners can be screwed up. Obedience depends on the training done, and manners depend on how the dog is lived with in the home.
